Elo Liiv has been a sculptor for over 35 years. Liiv’s work is characterized by versatility, installation and experimentation. The artist is proficient in classical sculpture, but has also kept up with the changes in the field, he likes to experiment with video, mapping, light and kinetics – skillfully using the technological possibilities that modernity offers to the sculptor.
Liiv loves to work in public space, create shifts, compose with visuals and light. His works reflect worldview and social themes, as well as deeper psychoanalysis and mental states. Among the monuments in public space, he has completed memorials to Jaan Poska in Kadriorg, Ülo Pärnitsa in Ülemiste City, Kalju Lepiku in Koeru, Heino Kurvet in Pärnu, and the Giants who died in World War II in Kärdla. The Great Escape Memorial was recently opened on the banks of the Pärnu River.
Liiv teaches light installation and interactivity at the Estonian Academy of Arts, Tartu Art School and Tartu Art College, and has worked as a lighting design specialist in Tallinn. He is one of the leaders of the NGO Valgusklubi, organizing the Tallinn Light Biennale, the Tartu Light festival, and other events raising awareness of light.
Liiv has written several investigative articles and opinion pieces, and has fought for religious freedom, equal opportunities, and a clean natural environment.
