The gates

2016

Locations of Harju and Karja Gates in Tallinn Old Town, Tallinn, 2016
Public space installations with a height of approx. 5.5 meters

Two large-scale installations were erected on Harju and Karja Streets during the Old Town Days, marking the mighty entrances and exits from medieval Tallinn and bringing a visual touch of the former glory of Tallinn’s Old Town to the modern day. When creating the sculptural object, I focused on the shape of the opening of the massive gates bordered by the huge defensive fortifications, which stimulates the perception of the scale of past times even in today’s cityscape. The sizes and locations were based on the results of archaeological measurements and the opinions of historians.
