The dream of freedom is like a cosmic subway from one reality to another. Its rhythm is an endless commute between two destinations – real anguish and its memory. Between the Estonians’ yearning for freedom during the years of Soviet occupation and the historical memory mixed with the freedom intoxication of the 1990s. Back and forth, without intermediate stops; only for a moment to change tracks.

People constantly dream of freedom, regardless of whether they are in captivity or not. When living in captivity, our faith and vision of freedom are so clear, sincere and strong – only our memories or dreams of a brighter life and dreams are our saviors. When living in freedom, however, we carry with us the heartache of the historical yoke, the memory images of the chains of suffering haunt us. Both points in the indeterminacy are like invisible and unreal cultural spaces from the outside; places of memory…. which is why none of us are 100% present.
